Go to a credit report agency and order a copy of your credit report and then sign up for their quarterly checks on your report. Also, check your credit cards to see if anything has been charged. Never send your credit card info to an e-mail offering discounted prices and never respond to an online request by a bank or anything else that requests all of your data. It will be sold within minutes.

Not sure that you can do anything to prevent it from landing in the wrong hands. Whoever found your papers has Everything needed to make Identity Theft soooooo easy. My ex husband had his SSN stolen(he got lucky that they only opened a cell phone acct with it) & Social Security would Not give him a new #. That was a few yrs ago, so maybe your situation will be different. if you are lucky enough to get a new # Memorize It. It’s just not a good idea to keep it with you all the time. Hopefully a good samaritan will find it & turn it into the police. In the meantime try calling the police to see what you can do.
